OE Lido Stepless Setting
The name 'LIDO' explained
It was intriguing to find out how this grinder got it's name...
The 'LIDO' hand grinder is named after the little plastic keychain puzzles made by the LIDO plastic company in the 1950's.
Lido Grinding
Grinding about 20 grams of beans takes about 50secs depending on your arm speed,
Setting the stepless grind mechanism to anything up to ESPRESSO is easily attainable and with very consistent pleasing results, especially those wishing an ESPRESSO grind, like me; you can choke your Rancilio Silvia guaranteed, but to fine tune it to an acceptable espresso 'non-choke' grind is easy enough.
LIDO Stepless Settings
A burr adjustment setting of 1/4 to 3/4 turn is for espresso, 3/4 to 1 1/2 turn is for drip, and coarse begins at 1 1/2 out from the marked zero.
LIDO Burr Cleaning
It's rather simple thankfully; the entire frame and discs do not need to be taken apart, just remove the adjustment bar and handle from the bottom of the grinder, and pull out the burr, clean with brush and reverse back in! Of course, you could just use some GRINDZ cleaner pellets that will do a good job of removing those old oils!
Helping Hand
For those who don't want the hard work of turning the grinder, then you can obtain a custom made tool attachment for it...the OE POW-RUP LIDO electric drill interloc system will enable the quick and easy use of an electric drill to power your LIDO (I've one For Sale!)
The Orphan Espresso LIDO hand coffee grinder features:
- All aluminum stacked plate construction
- Dual bronze axle bearing system
- 38 mm conical steel grinding burr
- Locking stepless adjustment mechanism below the burr
- 8 oz thread on glass catch jar
- Two position handle
- Measures 11 1/4" high, 3" in diameter, and weighs 2 1/2 pounds
- Hopper capacity approximately 60 grams maximum (8 tablespoons beans)
- Hand built to last
Growing outward from the 38mm conical grinding burr, the LIDO is designed as an all purpose coffee grinder. The dual bronze bearings are fit to the burr axle at extremely tight tolerances so there is no wobble of the inner burr while grinding. The lockable stepless bottom adjustment system allows fine incremental adjustments to be made and maintained with no wandering of the adjustment setting. The two position handle allows the user the choice of a long handle for a two handed bicycle grinding motion or a shorter hold in one hand and turn the other motion. In either case the turning is very easy throughout the grind range. The grinding speed is average, as the the burr set used in the LIDO does not lend itself to aggressive attack. An example - 20 grams of coffee beans, test ground for French Press, required 110 turns, and took 60 seconds to grind.
The slow turning of this burr leads to a very consistent coffee grinding and the combination of slow speed and extreme burr stability make the LIDO an outstanding grinder for use in any brewing method. Our design goal was to produce a hand grinder particularly well suited to non espresso grinds....aeropress to french press and it performs well through these ranges, and is particularly good as a portable cupping grinder. The espresso grind on the LIDO is competent and on par with most small burr hand grinders on the market.
We designed the LIDO to meet our exacting standards of coffee grinding and the reasonable expectation of product reliability and longevity. All fasteners and threading are standard and the only breakable part, the catch cup, is a standard jar which is readily available in both glass and plastic.
Verdict
A well designed hand grinder that is built to last, and is perfect for coarse or drip uses, and ESPRESSO!
